BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? Jerry Sandusky's lawyers said Saturday they tried to quit at the start of jury selection in his child sex abuse trial because they weren't given enough time to prepare, raising an argument on the trial's speed that could become the thrust of an appeal.

And one of the jurors who convicted Sandusky of 45 child sex abuse counts said Saturday he was swayed by the "very convincing" testimony of eight accusers who said the retired Penn State assistant football coach molested them for years.

"It's hard to judge character on the stand, because you don't know these kids," juror Joshua Harper told NBC's "Today" show. "But most were very credible ? I would say all."

A day after Sandusky's conviction, his lawyers disclosed they felt too unprepared to adequately defend him because of how quickly the case was brought to trial. Experts have said the seven months between Sandusky's November arrest and trial was fast-paced by Pennsylvania standards.

"We told the trial court, the Superior Court and the Supreme Court we were not prepared to proceed to trial in June due to numerous issues, and we asked to withdraw from the case for those reasons," attorney Joe Amendola told The Associated Press.

The issues included a scheduling conflict with a defense team member and the need to read a cache of documents produced by a lengthy grand jury investigation. Judge John Cleland denied their request.

The attorneys raised other issues that could be part of the future appeal, saying a mistrial was sought and denied over a repetition at trial of a brief part of a November interview Sandusky had with NBC's Bob Costas.

Jurors in the two-week trial convicted Sandusky of 45 of the 48 counts against him, meaning Sandusky, 68, likely will die in prison.

Harper said the accusers who testified one by one of horrific abuse at Sandusky's hands were each believable, "but then also the fact that we saw this corroborating story between all of them. It was very convincing."

Then Sandusky's impassive face when the verdict was read was confirmation for the jury, he said.

"I looked at him during the reading of the verdict and just the look on his face. No real emotion," he said, "because he knew it was true."

Harper said jurors had some issues with the testimony of Mike McQueary, a then-assistant who said he saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in the Penn State showers in 2001; jurors acquitted Sandusky on one count relating to the incident.

The case is poised to move to an investigation of university officials' role in reporting the charges; two ex-school administrators face trial on charges they didn't properly report McQueary's account of the suspected abuse in 2001.

Almost immediately after the verdict, Penn State President Rodney Erickson signaled an openness to quickly settle potential civil lawsuits arising from the convictions, saying the school "wants to provide a forum where the university can privately, expeditiously and fairly address the victims' concerns and compensate them for claims."

The university recently reported a $1.8 billion endowment. But both sides have reasons not to want to go to court, said Jason Kutulakis, a Harrisburg-area lawyer who specializes in child welfare and juvenile law. Victims are reluctant to get on the stand and have their credibility attacked, he said.

But "Penn State's got so much egg on their face, they probably just want to make it all go away," he said.

For now, the school is facing one lawsuit from an accuser, Travis Weaver, who was not among those represented in the criminal case against Sandusky.

Lawyers for McQueary, who testified against Sandusky, have signaled their intent to sue, along with a lawyer for one accuser, so-called Victim 5.

Jeff Anderson, who represents Weaver, said that he represents more victims of Sandusky's and that he will ask the court to allow him to begin seeking information from Penn State in Weaver's case.

The next step is to determine the extent of Penn State's culpability, lawyers say. In part, that means finding out who in the university's upper ranks knew Sandusky was preying on boys and could have stopped it.

The former Penn State officials facing charges, athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz, are charged with lying to a grand jury about what they knew of a 2001 incident in which McQueary said he saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a football team shower.

A separate investigation by ex-FBI director Louis Freeh, who was hired by Penn State's board of trustees to investigate the university's handling of the Sandusky allegations, is due later this summer.

Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno was fired for a failure of leadership for not going to the police after McQueary told him about that incident. The scandal also caused the departure of university president Graham Spanier.

Philadelphia-based lawyer Fortunato Perri Jr., who followed the trial, said the jury's dismissal of the charge involving the 2001 shower incident could help Curley and Schultz' defense.

"You've now had a jury kind of preview your case with respect to the credibility of McQueary, and they didn't believe him," Perri said. "Who knows if the next jury would believe him or not believe him?"

But the administrators' attorneys would probably be precluded from introducing the acquittal evidence at the separate trial, Perri said.

Sandusky's sentencing is expected to occur in about three months; an exact date hasn't been set. Because of the severity of the charges and mandatory minimum sentences, he faces an effective life sentence.

Until his next court date, Sandusky is one of 272 inmates at the Centre County Correctional Facility, seven miles from the Penn State campus. He was kept under watch overnight and is allowed access to some personal items including a prayer book, and can get visits from family, friends and attorneys.

Rominger said he planned to visit him on Sunday.

A very Irish drama is playing out in a distant part of the British empire, with the businessman and former yoga guru Tony Quinn at its centre. PAUL CULLEN?reports from Road Town, Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands

THE COURTROOM IS bedecked with Union Jacks, and the registrar starts proceedings by saying, ?God save the queen,? but there is a distinctly Irish tinge to the case being heard on this tiny island by the commercial division of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.

The presiding judge, Justice Edward Bannister, has the tricky task of deciding who is right about a mass of claims and counterclaims being made by the present and former directors of International Natural Energy (INE), which struck oil in Belize with the financial help of scores of small investors from Ireland.

Two of the company?s Irish founders, Sheila McCaffrey and Susan Morrice, are at loggerheads over control of a company that has earned hundreds of millions of euro in oil revenue over the past five years.

And then there is Tony Quinn, the yoga guru, health-food shop owner, hypnotherapist and now INE director, who has the most to win or lose from the proceedings. Quinn was given 64,000 shares in the company in 2006 ? this is not in dispute by either side ? and stands to earn $23 million (?18 million) under an agreement reached with INE last August to buy them back. But Justice Bannister has stopped this transaction going ahead until the case brought by McCaffrey is dealt with.

In her claim, McCaffrey alleges the company is being mismanaged, with money being diverted to benefit Morrice and Quinn. She says Quinn?s shares were never validly allotted. The two deny her claims and say she was removed because she had become impossible to work with and was unsuited to running the business as it grew.

The case, which is being heard in the British Virgin Islands because INE is incorporated nearby in the Caribbean, is being watched closely by the small investors, some of whom hope to launch a derivative action on foot of McCaffrey?s action. In spite of its success in striking oil, the company has yet to pay a dividend, although two years ago it did release loans to some shareholders under strict conditions.

Many of the shareholders who borrowed at the height of the Celtic Tiger to invest in the company are now under immense financial pressure and desperate for a payout. A handful of the disaffected shareholders made the long trip to the Caribbean this week to observe the trial. Quinn, his hair bleached and his complexion ruddied by the tropical sun, had a shorter trip, having flown over with his partner, Eve, from his home in the Bahamas.

Lots of companies get into dispute, and friends fall out, particularly when large sums of money are involved. What distinguishes this case is the ties that originally linked the Irish directors and shareholders, all of which lead back to Quinn and his ideas about the power of the mind to influence events.

For 50 years big oil companies prospected for oil in Belize with no success. Then INE?s subsidiary Belize Natural Energy, a minnow in the sector, came along and struck black gold at the first attempt.

The fairy tale started after Morrice and McCaffrey met on the White House lawn in the mid-1990s, at one of Bill Clinton?s drives to promote investment in Northern Ireland. They joined forces with Paul Marriott, an English drilling contractor, and secured funding from investors who, like them, had attended Quinn?s Educo Mind Power seminars. More than 300 people stumped up at least ?40,000, many of them borrowing from friends, family and banks to do so.

There was even an Irish connection in the transportation used to bring the drilling rig to Belize, when Marriott found space on a Fyffes banana boat returning from the UK to Central America with an empty load.

?It was unexpected in our business that the first well you drill in a country with 50 years of dry wells would produce a discovery so fast,? Marriott said in court this week. Last year he sued the company and reached a settlement.

Most people would put such an oil find down to luck and science. But some of those who attended Quinn?s ?18,500-a-pop seminars believe one of the reasons they struck oil arose from the application of his techniques to focus the mind and remove doubts and negative thoughts.

?I believe that thought, or belief, can affect matter,? says Ralph McCutcheon, an osteopath from Holywood, Co Down, who invested in the venture. ?I did therefore believe that our belief, as developed at the seminars, helped us find oil in Belize. Of course, there?s science and geology involved, but the concentration of thought helped direct our efforts.?

Even though he is now prominent among the rebel shareholders who are critical of Quinn?s involvement in the oil company, McCutcheon says he benefited from attending the seminars.

?I was coming out of a divorce, and at a low ebb in my life, when one of my patients mentioned them. I decided to give it a go. For me, the results were impressive. I regained my energy, I could operate on only four hours? sleep a night and I rebuilt my practice.

But McCutcheon believes some of those who attended the seminars overestimated their abilities and are now hugely in debt having borrowed too heavily for business ventures.

Quinn wasn?t involved in Belize when the oil was found, but his influence in the company grew after he was given shares. Marriott, in his evidence, said he was ?taken aback? at Quinn?s growing influence and gave it as a factor behind the growing divisions between the other directors.

Quinn flew here this week by private jet from his home in Paradise Island on the Bahamas, accompanied by his South African partner Eve and housekeeper Mary Power. Outside, stray chickens wandered around in the island heat, but inside the the air-conditioned courtroom, the atmosphere was glacial as both sides settled down for this latest round of their dispute.

This week the court has heard evidence about a series of fractious meetings between the directors in 2007 and 2008 at which efforts were made to resolve their growing differences. A new operating agreement that centralised control among the directors was introduced under disputed circumstances. Some of the directors shifted allegiances back and forth as the dispute played out, and there is little agreement between the two sides about what happened behind closed doors. As Justice Bannister delicately put it this week: ?The idea that everything in this case happened as it was stated to happen requires some testing.?

McCaffrey sounds to have been the biggest loser, having received nothing for her shareholding. She was removed as a director and her home in Belize was searched by the police on foot of a company complaint. With limited resources, she struggled for a number of years to get her case into court. She described her evidence to court this week as ?a snapshot of the living hell? she had endured over the past five years.

Whatever the outcome of the current case, it won?t mark the end of the disputes. The case taken by another director, Jean Cornec, over ?11.7 million he says he is due for his shares is scheduled to be heard in Denver, Colorado, next year. Quinn has been ordered by the Irish courts to attend that case.

Meanwhile, the disaffected shareholders are still hoping to have their day in court.

Issues that have come under scrutiny include his claims to have healing powers, the devotion he enjoys from his closest confidantes, the financial hardship of some of those who borrowed heavily to attend his seminars and his latest involvement in INE.

Study of phase change materials could lead to better computer memory

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? Memory devices for computers require a large collection of components that can switch between two states, which represent the 1's and 0's of binary language. Engineers hope to make next-generation chips with materials that distinguish between these states by physically rearranging their atoms into different phases. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have now provided new insight into how this phase change happens, which could help engineers make memory storage devices faster and more efficient.

The research was conducted by Ritesh Agarwal, associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science, along with members of his research group. A.T. Charlie Johnson, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the School of Arts and Sciences, and Ju Li, now a professor of nuclear science and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also contributed to the study.

Their research was published in the journal Science.

"For many years there has been a push to find memory storage that is at once scalable, non-volatile and fast," Agarwal said. "Phase change materials could meet all of those criteria, but the problem is that we don't know much about how these materials actually work."

Some kinds of memory, like a computer's RAM, can switch between states very quickly, allowing for the computation necessary to run programs. But this kind of memory is "volatile" in that it needs a constant supply of power to maintain its states. Other kinds of memory, like the kind found on a flash drive, is non-volatile in that it retains its data even after the power is turned off. This kind of memory, however, has low switching speeds. Researchers have long attempted to find a "universal memory" which combines both non-volatility and high switching speeds, along with scalability, the ability to store large amounts of data.

While there are other contenders, phase change materials, or PCMs, are ideal candidates for universal memory. PCM storage devices are now starting to become commercially available, but their efficiency is hindered by the fact that the actual mechanics of their phase change are not well understood.

The phases these PCMs switch between are different arrangements of their internal atomic structure. They begin in a crystalline phase, where their atoms are in an ordered lattice but can switch to a disordered, amorphous phase. The two phases provide much different levels of resistance to electrical current, which is why they are useful for memory storage.

"When you have atoms arranged in a periodic lattice, electrons can flow very easily as they essentially know what to expect," Agarwal said. "But in the amorphous phase, there is no long-range order; there's no way to predict the position of atoms going from one part of the material to the other. This scatters the electrons, leading to very high resistance."

It has been generally believed that the only way to switch between these two states involved heating, which allows the atoms to move out of their lattice positions as the material briefly melts, and rapid cooling, or "quenching," which solidifies the material into the amorphous phase without giving its atoms the chance to re-crystallize.

"Now we have shown that there is a way to achieve this transition without melting the material," Agarwal said. "We show that short electrical pulses of a few hundred nanosecond duration gradually induce disorder in the material until it amorphizes."

Their advance was made possible by fashioning a PCM into thin nanowires, rather than a more bulky counterpart. This enabled the researchers to observe the phase change as it happened using a high-resolution transmission electron microscope. Earlier researchers could only look at cross sections of their bulkier PCMs after the switching process was over.

By looking at the change in "real time," the Penn researchers could see what effect the electrical pulses were having at an atomic level of detail.

"The pulses create 'dislocations,' which are planes of atoms removed from the crystal pattern, disrupting the order locally on an atomic length scale," said Pavan Nukala, a co-author and member of the Agarwal group. "As we apply more and more pulses, the number of these dislocations start to increase."

"Eventually, the dislocations start to move down the nanowire in the direction of the current," Agarwal said. "At certain point, the number and density of dislocations becomes so huge that they jam in one spot."

Like a traffic jam on a highway, the dislocations continue to pile up at that spot as more and more move down the length of the nanowire. At a critical point, the increasing disorder causes the material to amorphize the wire at the location of the jam.

The amorphous region, which always forms at the point of the jam and cuts through the entire cross section of the nanowire, is proof that this dislocation-based mechanism is fundamentally different from the melt-quench mechanism. With melting, the amorphous part should have spread along the surface of the material, rather than cut through its cross section.

"Having the surface amorphize doesn't give us high resistance ratios because current can still travel through the crystalline interior," Agarwal said. "Cutting across the entire nanowire completely blocks the current, making for a much better memory devices.

"With surface melting, you can increase the resistance a few times at most, but our observation that the resistance increased by two or three orders of magnitude is another evidence of the new mechanism."

The PCM that researchers used in their study contained long tellurium-telluriumbonds that can easily slide apart, facilitating the planar dislocations that cause the material to amorphize.

The material, along with a better understanding of the mechanics of its phase change, will provide a starting point for picking the right qualities for future PCMs.

"If people think that melting is the only mechanism for phase change, then all the emphasis will be on making materials with low melting temperatures," Agarwal said. "But we've shown that we need to do something else, which is to also look for materials that can create dislocations easily."

In addition to Agarwal, Li, Johnson and Nukala, the research was conducted by Sung-Wook Nam, Hee-Suk Chung, Yu Chieh Lo, Liang Qi, Ye Lu and Yeonwoong Jung, all of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in Penn Engineering.

The research was supported by Penn's Nano/Bio Interface Center, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research and MIT's Materials Structures and Devices Center.

Freud's theory of unconscious conflict linked to anxiety symptoms in new U-M brain research

An experiment that Sigmund Freud could never have imagined 100 years ago may help lend scientific support for one of his key theories, and help connect it with current neuroscience.

Today at the 101st Annual Meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association, a University of Michigan professor who has spent decades applying scientific methods to the study of psychoanalysis will present new data supporting a causal link between the psychoanalytic concept known as unconscious conflict, and the conscious symptoms experienced by people with anxiety disorders such as phobias.

Howard Shevrin, Ph.D., emeritus professor of psychology in the U-M Medical School's Department of Psychiatry, will present data from experiments performed in U-M's Ormond and Hazel Hunt Laboratory.

The research involved 11 people with anxiety disorders who each received a series of psychoanalytically oriented diagnostic sessions conducted by a psychoanalyst.

From these interviews the psychoanalysts inferred what underlying unconscious conflict might be causing the person's anxiety disorder. Words capturing the nature of the unconscious conflict were then selected from the interviews and used as stimuli in the laboratory. They also selected words related to each patient's experience of anxiety disorder symptoms. Although these words differed from patient to patient, results showed that they functioned in the same way.

These verbal stimuli were presented subliminally at one thousandth of a second, and supraliminally at 30 milliseconds. A control category of stimuli was added that had no relationship to the unconscious conflict or anxiety symptom. While the stimuli were presented to the patients, scalp electrodes record the brain responses to them.

In a previous experiment Shevrin had demonstrated that time-frequency features, a type of brain activity, showed that patients grouped the unconscious conflict stimuli together only when they were presented subliminally. But the conscious symptom-related stimuli showed the reverse pattern brain activity was better grouped together when patients viewed those words supraliminally.

"Only when the unconscious conflict words were presented unconsciously could the brain see them as connected," Shevrin notes. "What the analysts put together from the interview session made sense to the brain only unconsciously."

However, the experimental design in this first experiment did not allow for directly comparing the effect of the unconscious conflict stimuli on the conscious symptom stimuli.

To obtain evidence for that next level, the unconscious conflict stimuli were presented immediately prior to the conscious symptom stimuli and a new measurement was made, of the brain's own alpha wave frequency, at 8-13 cycles per second, that had been shown to inhibit various cognitive functions.

Highly significant correlations, suggesting an inhibitory effect, were obtained when the amount of alpha generated by the unconscious conflict stimuli were correlated with the amount of alpha associated with the conscious symptom alpha -- but only when the unconscious conflict stimuli were presented subliminally. No results were obtained when control stimuli replaced the symptom words. The fact that these findings are a function of inhibition suggests that from a psychoanalytic standpoint that repression might be involved.

"These results create a compelling case that unconscious conflicts cause or contribute to the anxiety symptoms the patient is experiencing," says Shevrin, who also holds an emeritus position in the Department of Psychology in U-M's College of Literature, Science and the Arts. "These findings and the interdisciplinary methods used which draw on psychoanalysis, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience -- demonstrate that it is possible to develop an interdisciplinary science drawing upon psychoanalytic theory."

He notes that a prominent critic of psychoanalysis and Freudian theory, Adolf Grunbaum, Ph.D., professor of the philosophy of science at the University of Pittsburgh, has expressed satisfaction that the new results, when added to previous evidence, show that fundamental psychoanalytic concepts can indeed be tested in empirical ways.

For more than 40 years, Shevrin has led a team that has pushed at the boundaries between the disciplines of neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and psychoanalysis, looking for evidence that Freudian concepts such as the unconscious and repression could be documented through physical measures of brain activity. His work has explored the territory where neurobiology, thoughts, emotions and behavior meet.

In 1968 he published the first report of brain responses to unconscious visual stimuli in Science, thus providing strong objective evidence for the existence of the unconscious at a time when most scientists were skeptical of Freud's ideas. In that same study, he showed that unconscious perceptions are processed in different ways from conscious perceptions, a finding consistent with Freud's views on how the unconscious works.

In recent years, exchanges between Grunbaum and Shevrin explored the nature of the evidence for the existence and impact of unconscious conflicts. In a 1992 publication, the first study referred to, Grunbaum agreed that Shevrin had obtained objective brain based evidence for the existence of unconscious conflict, but Grunbaum noted that he had not shown that these conflicts caused psychiatric symptoms. His response to being informed of the new findings was an email stating: "I am satisfied".

BRACED states and opportunities in agricultural value chain ...

Reduction of international trade barriers such as tariffs, export fees, import quotas as well as the global distribution of goods and services has led to growing integration of world markets, creating a highly competitive business environment which stifles businesses in poor countries that cannot compete adequately because of diseconomies of scale. To achieve competitive advantage, businesses in poor countries are increasingly adopting the value chain model. For example, small holder agricultural producers in Honduras that were disenfranchised by the sheer force of globalisation leveraged the model to attain integration with international partners, thereby attaining global competitiveness. The value chain model improved agricultural processes, productivity and profitability among small agricultural producers in the South American country.

The model is premised on the fact that a product is rarely directly consumed at the place of its production; it is processed, combined with other products, transported, packaged, displayed, and so on until it reaches the final consumer. In this process, the raw materials, intermediate products and final products are owned by various players who are linked by trade and services, and each adds value to the product. Various types of public and private services, such as business development services, electricity, transport, financial services, are as important as favourable framework conditions, i.e. laws, regulations and their enforcement. The value chain model estimates the value each particular activity adds to a product or service, and in so doing, manages the linkages between these activities to achieve competitive advantage.

The feat achieved in Honduras can be replicated in Nigeria through the development of regional agricultural value chains that would enhance investment, trade, marketing and food security. Developing regional value chains and markets is both feasible and important given the country?s high population and income growth rates, which have led to increasing demand for high-value food commodities such as wheat, dairy and meat products and processed food commodities, a trend that is expected to continue. More so, recent increases in food prices have created pressures and opened up opportunities for the country and its geopolitical zones to carefully assess the potential benefits of implementing the food production and agribusiness value chain strategy.

Using the BRACED states (Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta) as a model, steps such as identifying and mapping potential supply chains must be taken by member states to enable the zone to develop a competitive and all-inclusive agricultural value chain. For instance, Edo State is rich in cassava, while Delta State is highly industrialised and has skilled workforce which may better suit cassava processing. Going further down the value chain, Rivers State has good intermodal transport system and networks for domestic and international distribution which makes it a good location for sales and distribution. An interstate value chain like this will improve productivity level, business processes, know-how and profit, which will better the lives of agricultural producers, especially small holders in the region.

Identifying and evaluating opportunities among partnering states will provide valuable perspectives on the strengths, limitations and opportunities for member states in the value chain. A number of conditions are necessary for selecting production and/or processing areas, the main one being proximity to the user. Owing to the bulkiness of cassava and the need, at times, to process freshly harvested cassava, the distance between production and processing points may become a critical decision factor.

A study carried out in 2004 by the International Fund for Agricultural Development suggested that states with low population and village density may have greater opportunities for cassava production expansion and perhaps larger contiguous blocks of land. Production and price variables are also considered in the selection process. It is suggested that states with higher than average yields (greater than 12 tonnes/hectares) were better locations for increasing cassava production. Low absolute root prices (less than N8, 000) and root prices below the 80 per cent maize threshold price were also interpreted as indicators of competitively priced cassava and good producing states.

Edo State is ideal for cassava production. It has a relatively low population, not the lowest out of the BRACED states but low enough to give maximum utility coupled with cassava root prices (which historically stood at N4,000-N8,000) as well as the fact that agriculture remains the predominant occupation for people within the state. All these together create a good environment for cassava production. Bayelsa and Cross River states also fit into the cassava production group.

On the other hand, the availability of good road networks is beneficial to new industries, both in terms of their sourcing of raw material and their ability to move their products to markets. The existence of industries that are potential cassava users (animal feed, flour and starch) is also a positive indicator. Delta State fits into this group for a variety of reasons. Primarily, better infrastructure and a skilled workforce are in place here as well as a large poultry density that can serve as off takers situated close to the source. Finally, the ability to distribute and trade with partners globally will greatly serve the value chain. Rivers State with a large port situated at Port Harcourt can serve this purpose within the value chain.

Once an existing value chain is in place, business partners (BRACED states) will have to go a step further in order to sustain development. This will involve a lot of self-assessment and answers to questions such as, what are you doing well? What would you like to improve? This will prove vital in determining where the greatest opportunities are for value chain development such as product quality, system efficiency or differentiated or specialised products.

Last but not the least in the value chain development is the need to build vital business relationships between different segments in the value chain. Successful value chain managers report that relationships are the most important element of a successful value chain. Successful value chains are built on relationship strength which includes the following elements: a common vision, communication, cooperation, trust, adaptability, interdependence and commitment. This is what makes forums and commissions such as the BRACED Commission vitally important to the development of each of the member states. Each can come together, share ideas, and develop a common goal/strategy in order to drive economic growth.

Additionally, he discovered that Domino?s marketing department had planned ahead for a more aggressive coupon: a pizza for free.? The coupon code was listed in the Flash app, so he tried it.? 30 minutes later, he was enjoying a free pizza.? 30 minutes after that, he posted the coupon code into an online forum.? By the time Domino?s corporate office opened the next morning and discovered their secret had been released, over 11,000 free pizzas had been delivered.? Embedding the coupon code into the client side application had allowed it to be exposed, and cost the company over $50,000 in free pizza.? For a large company, that?s not a lot of money, but it was money that could easily have been saved by verifying the coupon code on the server instead.

Similar examples have been found that use a relatively simple substitution of data on a form submission to allow an attacker to set her own price when ordering from a web site.? The server sent the web page to the client with prices for each item, but the ?add to cart? button submitted the price back to the server.? In one instance, a security researcher successfully placed an order for a multi-million-dollar product for the cost of less than one dollar.? This kind of flaw would also have been easy to avoid: return the part number from the client, and let the server look it up in the same database it used to list the prices when drawing the page.

Both of these examples assume an e-business model, but application flaws can affect any kind of web application.? When an application is flawed it results in network security weaknesses, creating vulnerability. Vulnerability potentially allows an attacker to gain access to system information, or even system configuration.? While security threats like Denial of Service attacks are just intended to take a system offline, application flaws can lead to an attacker taking system control.

Unintentionally poor implementation of an application can also leave it vulnerable to attacks like SQL injections. Today, SQL injection attack vectors are the most common form of attack according to the 2012 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report. A typical scenario for an SQL injection is when an attacker is able to embed SQL control statements into text fields on a web page.? When the form is submitted, the SQL server doesn?t just store the text ? it recognizes and executes the commands.? The results can be severe: recently, in June 2012, over 6 million hashed passwords from LinkedIn were posted online.? While LinkedIn has refused to comment officially, an article in SC Magazine cites the claims of anonymous insiders that the hack occurred several months ago via SQL injection.? LinkedIn was actually lucky: first, SQL injection could potentially have given an attacker power to delete much of their content.? Second, LinkedIn eventually found out about their web app flaw, and should be able to fix it.? Compare that to Nortel Networks, who had a data breach that lasted almost 10 years.

Despite its power, a SQL injection flaw is relatively easy to fix.? When the web server receives information from the user, it should quote or encapsulate the data in a way that the SQL server will only see it as data, never as an instruction.? However, if the web application was written so that each page can connect directly to the SQL server, not through a local function, then the fix will require searching through the entire app to ensure that each SQL connection goes through that local function which applies the security controls.? It?s a lot less painful to include security at the design phase than trying to retrofit it in later.

Although all of the examples in this blog post have been big, most companies are small, and a recent survey of 501 small businesses found that 85% aren?t taking precautions, because they think they?re too small to be a target.? If you, reading this blog post and think that you?re too small to be a target, please keep this in mind.? Large numbers of hackers are constantly running automated scans of the Internet, like Google?s evil twin,
looking for vulnerable sites and flawed applications.? Some of them are specifically looking for smaller companies with poor security.? Those sites make great places to use as relays when attacking other companies: the hacker will break into your system, and then use your system to launch an attack on someone else.? Perhaps worse, ?obscure? sites are occasionally used by hackers to serve illicit content, like malware or even child pornography.? The best that a small company with little security can hope for is that hackers will use their server to send spam.? Being small just makes you a different kind of target, and applying even a basic level of security is a good investment.

As more mobile, web-based, and Enterprise applications get built and hosted on third-party platforms it is important to understand the potential hazards that application flaws might present to your network safety. It?s not just about the Quality of Service delivery of these applications ? they can also be an easy way for attackers to penetrate your system. While following the steps above will not guarantee that you will avoid an attack, it will make you a more difficult target, and convince attackers to find someone easier.
